Paid Parking on Bolivar Beaches a Success
After almost a season of charging to park on Bolivar Peninsula beaches, county officials are declaring the program a success.
Having already collected $169,000 for passes to park along the 32-mile stretch of sand, the county expects to gross more than $210,000 by the time the fiscal year ends Sept. 30.
That would net about $150,000 to improve beach amenities and services.
“It’s been better than I thought it would be,” County Judge Jim Yarbrough said Thursday.
In January and February, the county sold $5 “Early Bird” season passes from the parks and senior services center in La Marque.
Then, starting March 1, it began selling lots of 25 or more to Bolivar merchants and real-estate agents for $9.50.
By letting them resell the passes for $10, the county gave the merchants and agents an incentive to get the word out that people need to buy a pass to park on the beach.
“The program is going a lot smoother than I anticipated,” said Dennis Harris, director of parks and senior services.
Because the pass fees were for use of the public beaches, state law requires that the money be spent improving them. It can go for services such as beach patrol or beach cleaning, or it could be used to add amenities such as trash cans and portable toilets.
Harris and County Commissioner Patrick Doyle will have a public hearing on Bolivar Peninsula this fall to discuss how residents want those funds to be spent.
While the program has been considered a success, officials still are trying to come up with a way to enforce paid parking on Bolivar beaches. Yarbrough said he’s reluctant to ask the sheriff’s department to ticket violators.

We have a family vacation house close to the North Jetties and would love to take our kids to the little Bolivar beach by the boat launch there by the jetties. But everytime we try to go there the beach if overrun by people who do not have the necessary sticker required to be on that beach.
We are tax paying Bolivar homeowners who have spent the money to purchase our beach stickers and cannot even use our own beaches because there are so many people on the beach and not a single one of them have a sticker on their vehicles and some families have 2 or 3 vehicles each.
I do not see how this sticker program is fair to the Bolivar people. Maybe for Crystal Beach, but it is not being enforced on the Bolivar beaches.
Why make the beaches a sticker beach if you are not going to enforce it.
I would love to know to to contact with complants regarding this. |

Great Comment!
At the last Chamber Meeting we discussed this very issue.
As we start actually receiving the funds generated from the sticker program, we can concentrate on ways to use the money, for example - beach cleanup - and how to enforce the program. |

We've been visiting Bolivar every summer for 25 years. The beach certainly did need some help and I don't mind paying to use the beach, however, when we were there in June (07) we couldn't get on the beach east of Rollover due to a very large pipe blocking the way. We did and will buy the stickers. We love the area because the beach is basically un-restricted for vehicles. Please don't regulate the fun out of Bolivar beaches. By the way my wife and I are in our 60's and usually spend about $2,000 a year including beach house rent. We want the area to do well. |

B. Bankes , Good Post!!!!!! We had the same trouble 3 times over plus more. No 911 answers to our calls. or rather no Sheriff deputy. stolen things. People saying on beach with stickers having their things stolen. Our Boat had to be guarded into the night to keep Illegals from taking it! No stickers on their cars. Watching a lady trying to enforce the sticker and being attacked by a non English speaking male. kicking dirt at her. I personally spoke with some who spoke English and was told that the sheriff deputies were telling them that part of the beach was free! And they were down by Crystal Beach and sent there. We had 3 homes there in August. NO SECURITY THERE. We had 37 people of our own. The young ladies were harassed! The Deputies Just like setting by the Ferry and riding back and forth. not answering calls. Personally I think there should be a booth put by the Jetty entrance and a 5 dollar day fee charged. That would pay for the policing and the clean up of their trash. OH yes, We own a home here also! So I know from what I speak. We pay taxes here. Please come back. We will try to wake up our elected officials. |

It's not only at Bolivar, we're experiencing the same thing at Crystal Beach so don't feel alone. Memorial Day weekend we did have an incident w/4 vehicles w/hispancies that were doing wheelies, stopped, popped the truck and then opened the beer bottles Enforcement did arrives and before you know it, these people took off. What a "God Send". You're not alone in your problems. |
