Bolivar Galveston Ferry Ready By November?
The Bolivar Galveston Ferry could reopen to the public as early as November 2008.
The state transportation department has awarded a $4.85 million contract to dredge the landings back to a safe operating depth. But Weeks Marine Inc., the New Jersey-based company given the contract, is not expected to begin the project until the end of this month. The dredging itself will take at least another week.
"That's the best-case" - William P. Mallini, Texas Department of Transportation Galveston Ferry Operations Manager
Galveston County Commissioner Pat Doyle said the ferry will play a key role in rebuilding. "I would hope that they could get the dredge company there sooner," Doyle said by telephone Thursday. "They are working as hard as they can. They realize we're in dire need here and that we need that ferry to get back to regular commerce."
The ferry is essential to recovery, reducing travel time from 2 hours to less than an hour - for needed equipment and supplies.
The U.S. Coast Guard ordered the ferry shut down Sept. 11th, two days before Ike's landfall, as weather conditions worsened. Five days later, one of the system's four boats began ferrying emergency vehicles, but it has remained closed to the public.
Texas 87, which stretches across the peninsula from the ferry landing to High Island, is limited to one-way traffic at Rollover Pass, where the bridge partially collapsed during the storm.
Doyle said the bridge should be repaired by late November but noted that access to the peninsula could increase be-fore then, depending on other infrastructure improvements. |

On Bolivar Peninsula, just northeast of Galveston, residents continue to clean up the spit of land where most homes were flattened or sustained catastrophic damage. Residents are allowed to visit to make repairs but still cannot live there.
Access to Bolivar, population 4,000, remains a problem as repairs to a ferry that connects it to the mainland and a bridge on the peninsula are still under way, Yarbrough said. Power and water probably won't be fully restored to the peninsula until mid-to-late November.
Debris continues to mount on Bolivar but can't be removed until officials are certain none of the hundreds of missing are in any of the piles, Yarbrough said. |

Entergy has been working hard to restore power to the peninsula. We should have power to parts of Crystal Beach by the end of week. When the repair at roll over is complete we will have water shortly after.
We have opened up a temp. office in Nederland.
We are working on returning money to the renters right now, they are emailing everyday by the hundreds. It is going to take us a little while to get to everything but if you have any questions, email them to me and I will work as hard as I can to answer you or get what ever information you need.
For those of you that have houses, Galveston County is going to require you to have your meter can rewired and your septic tank inspected. I will start a list to have these things taken care of for you at your request. If you have any questions for the county office feel free to give them a call at 409 770 5552. For those of you that plan to rebuild, we have a list of builders. Just let me know if your interested.
If you are interested in selling your property, let me know so I can get with Anne Willis - Broker Owner of Swedes Real Estate - and she can get a price for you. |

A dredging project scheduled to begin late Monday could have the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry open to the public within a couple of weeks.
