U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to visit Smith Oaks Rookery.
August 13, 10:30 AM
The Rookery at Smith Oaks in High Island

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison personally requested to hold a media event at our High Island sanctuaries during her upcoming 3-day touring event promoting tourism and habitat conservation and discussing energy and hurricane preparedness.
Every year in August, during legislative recess, Senator Hutchison selects a region in Texas to visit and this year she’ll be traveling the Texas Gulf Coast from Harlingen to Beaumont. The Senator will visit 17 counties and make 21 stops.
Travelling in tour buses, Senator Hutchison will be accompanied by other elected officials and the media. It’d be terrific to have as many folks as possible attend the event to interact with the Senator, media, and show support for our fabulous sanctuaries and the wonderful work we do!
Please make plans to attend!

Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary
143 acres on High Island which contain oak mottes with live oaks over 100 year old, ponds, wetlands and coastal prairie. The Rookery in the middle of Clay Bottom Pond has become a favored roosting and nesting place for thousands of waterbirds. Open to the public sunrise to sunset year round.
With the help of many volunteers, Don Verser donated time and materials to build a new pond and drip at the old homestead area of Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary in 2007. The first several months of the project included privet and ligustrum clearing, followed by installation of new shrubs and understory trees. The new water feature has already started to attract birds to this historically significant part of High Island.
