Massaging my jig along the bottom as it drifted with the tide I could feel every grain of sand and click of shell as it thumped its way along a submerged sandbar. Then, a sudden, aggressive “TIC” triggered my hook-set into a big fish, a strong fish. Arching rod and a reset drag prepared me for a long, hard fight…. “Gulp” had paid off for me again with a nice 22inch doormat sized flounder coming to net.

American White Pelican - (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) - Awkward but amusing to watch when waddling about on land, but surprisingly graceful to observe when in flight or water-born, the white pelican, as clumsy as it can be is as majestic as it is. The White Pelican are migratory birds, spending their summers northward and wintering southward, are rather large feathered creatures that journey to the Bolivar area around mid October.

12th Annual Peninsula Bike Drive Christmas is around the corner which means it's time for The Precinct 6 Constable's Office and Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce to start collecting donations for our 12th annual Peninsula Bike Drive. This function has always been something we have enjoyed doing, but it wouldn't happen without help from the whole community. With hard economic times, this year it will be extremely tough for many families to put gifts under the tree for their children. If you are able, please help put a smile on a child's face for Christmas. Donations can be sent to Pct 6 Constables Office, PO Box 680, Port Bolivar, Tx. 77650. PLEASE MAKE ALL PAYMENTS PAYABLE TO: The Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.
Thank you, William Comeaux |

TGC 5 Money-Saving Tools for the Cheap Traveler | | 5/22/2013 1:00:01 PM |
Looking for some tools to help you save money while traveling? Check out a few work for travel sites - Or just drive to the Texas coast. Michael Stuart's insight:
Granted, they do depend in part on the type of travel you're planning. Some are great if you're looking to crash for free or find last-minute rooms; others are more ideal for long-term trips where you'll be working for the roof over your head. You can try one, two or a combination of them all — it's a win-win regardles. 1. CouchSurfingCouchSurfing.org is a hospitality sharing platform that's been around since 2003. Its goal is exactly what it sounds like: to set you up with a couch to "crash" on. To use it, you need to register and fill out a basic profile, with your name, location, hobbies, etc. Once your profile's public, you can indicate how many travelers you're willing to accommodate (it's a rule that you need to be open to hosting if you'll be surfing.) 2. WorkAwayit's a website that connects you to participants abroad who are willing to provide food and accommodation in return for work. 3. WWOOFSimilar to WorkAway, the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) is an exchange program that pairs volunteers with hosts in different parts of the world. The niche here is "organic farm," which is where you'll be working. 4. HelpXSimilar to the previous two, HelpX is an online platform that connects travelers to hosts willing to provide food and board for work. 5. WeHostelsUse it to find hostels and book beds at the last minute wherever you're traveling. Once you check in, you can use it to meet other travelers who are staying at the hostel as well. Or just drive to the Texas coast and have it all! |

TGC Galveston Island Beach Patrol Mothers Day | | 5/20/2013 12:56:02 PM |
The Galveston Island Beach Patrol has island-wide beach flag status with safety information, live beach cameras, and educational ocean safety materials for Galveston Island and the broader Coastal Texas Community. Michael Stuart's insight:
Mothers Day brought lots of families to the beaches and it was great to see everyone out there. Also great to see was how well the Gay Splash Day event went at East Beach. We had very few problems for such a large crowd. Lt. Pete Alcocer of the Galveston Police Department heads up the Park Board funded Beach Security Detail and really managed the event well along with an excellent crew of cops from the GPD, Galveston Sheriff Office, and other local groups. The Galveston Island Beach Patrol is a state certified, first response agency employing over 80 lifeguards, senior guards, and supervisors. Each of the nine units is staffed by at least one person who has a minimum of an EMT-B certification. The units are equipped with trauma kits, spinal immobilization equipment and oxygen, as well as water rescue equipment. We have a rescue boat which, a rigid hull inflatable, that will hold up to five people and can be launched off the beach. Three personal watercraft are also used for patrol and rescue. Swedes 40 Years and Counting by Georgia Osten | | 7/23/2012 2:18:00 PM | by Georgia Osten
The Walla Family blew into town last Monday for their 40th Annual Crystal Beach Vacation. Yes, Mildred and Johnnie Walla and family have been coming to Crystal Beach every summer for the last 40 years! Mildred remembers coming with her father when she was in high school in Beaumont. To celebrate the event, they had special t-shirts printed. They always plan their vacation for the week after the 4th, because "the crowds are smaller." Their first vacation rental was handled by Mr. Swede himself, and they have been coming back to Swede's Real Estate ever since. |
