The Gilchrist Community Association (GCA) would like to thank all of
the fellow citizens of Bolivar Peninsula for their overwhelming
support for our Legal Defense Fundraiser. Rollover Pass has a lot of
history and is enjoyed by thousands of fisherman, weekenders and
overnighters who support local businesses throughout the peninsula
while they are here and are vital to all of our financial growth.  I
can say without any reservation that our Golf Cart Fish Fry Fundraiser
was successful and we could not have done it without you.

One of the GCA’s missions is to provide community services and on
Saturday, we prepared 50 fish fry plates and delivered them to the
employees of  Gulf Coast Market who were unable to attend because they
were at work providing services to the visitors of the peninsula. We
are looking forward to providing other services in the near future.

Once again, thank you Bolivar Peninsula!

Sincerely,
Ted Vega
President, Gilchrist Community Association

Governor [Noteworthy] We Built A Stronger Texas
8/29/2014 5:06:14 PM When it comes to building a thriving economy that benefits citizens across the board, Texas has taken an approach that is as simple as it is revolutionary: put people – employers and employees alike – in the best possible position to succeed, and then get out of the way.
Governor [Noteworthy] Education Key To Continued Texas Prosperity
8/29/2014 5:06:14 PM Texas has created a business climate unrivaled in the nation. We have low taxes, fair courts, reasonable and predictable regulations and a commitment to practicing the kind of fiscal conservatism that leaves money on the table at the end of the biennium.
TGC Oil Spill Money Helps Texas Protect Coast
8/26/2014 3:30:03 PM

Money paid by BP and Transocean to settle criminal penalties arising from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill has helped Texas close the largest conservation land purchase in the state’s history: Just over 17,000 acres of undisturbed coastal prairie in Calhoun County for $50 million.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation (the non-profit fundraising arm of the state’s parks department) will raise the balance of the funds — about $15 million after the oil spill funds are applied. The foundation would initially be a joint owner of the land, alongside other non-profit conservation organizations; eventually, the plan is for the land to be donated to the department itself.

Conservationists and environmental advocates hailed the purchase as a significant move to protect the state’s coast, which experts estimate is losing hundreds of acres of rural land each day. Conserving rural lands, they said, is crucial not only for preserving open spaces in Texas, but also as a way to protect water resources. Along the coast, keeping land undeveloped can serve as a “natural buffer” against sea-level rise and storm surges — often a much cheaper way to ensure hurricane protection than costly infrastructure like seawalls.

TGC 4 Scenarios Show What Climate Change May do to our coasts
8/26/2014 1:49:34 PM

The most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report left no doubt about the future of the world if we don't slow the rate at which we release heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere.

Michael Stuart's insight:

The easier course, though, is to cut emissions. To have a fighting chance of coping with climate disorder, we have to cut greenhouse gases quickly, not just wait until it's convenient.

Swedes 40 Years and Counting by Georgia Osten
7/23/2012 2:18:00 PM by Georgia Osten The Walla Family blew into town last Monday for their 40th Annual Crystal Beach Vacation. Yes, Mildred and Johnnie Walla and family have been coming to Crystal Beach every summer for the last 40 years! Mildred remembers coming with her father when she was in high school in Beaumont. To celebrate the event, they had special t-shirts printed. They always plan their vacation for the week after the 4th, because "the crowds are smaller." Their first vacation rental was handled by Mr. Swede himself, and they have been coming back to Swede's Real Estate ever since.
